Winter Protection and Frost Prevention
Protect your home from cold weather damage with these simple steps.
As temperatures drop, it’s important to take precautions to avoid burst pipes, frost damage, and electrical hazards. Here’s how you can prepare your home and stay safe during the winter months.
Frost Protection Tips
Keep your heating on low and constant, even when you're out.
- Allow warm air to circulate by keeping internal doors open. If you have a loft hatch, leave it slightly ajar.
- Going away for a while? Let your Housing Officer know and ask a friend or relative to check in on your home.
Water Safety
Know where your stop valve is – it’s usually under the sink, in a hall cupboard or if you live in a close behind a panel on your landing.
If a pipe freezes or bursts:
- Turn off the water supply at the stop valve.
- Turn off all taps.
- Do not touch sockets or switches if water is present – instead, turn off electricity at the consumer unit.
- Call our office immediately. If we’re closed, you’ll be redirected to our emergency contractor.
If you live in a flat, let neighbours below know in case of leaks.
